Outdoor Learning

At Woodley CofE Primary, we believe the natural world is a powerful classroom where children thrive physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually. Through our dedicated outdoor space, The Rainbow Garden, we provide meaningful opportunities for children to explore, discover and develop a lifelong love of nature.

Research shows that outdoor play and learning improves children’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, while also enhancing learning. In The Rainbow Garden, children take part in activities that encourage teamwork, communication, creativity and quiet reflection in nature.

Outdoor learning supports the whole child. Physically, children develop gross and fine motor skills through exploring, collecting and using natural resources. Emotionally, activities build confidence, resilience and a sense of achievement while promoting calmness and wellbeing. Socially, children learn to work cooperatively, discuss ideas and support one another. Intellectually, creative experiences such as making art from natural materials inspire imagination and reflection.

We also nurture moral and spiritual development by teaching children to respect and care for the woodland/natural environment. Pupils learn to protect nature for future generations by acting responsibly and leaving the area as they found it.
