Big Sisters and Big Brothers

At Woodley C of E we aim to ensure that every child feels happy, safe and secure and to equip the children with the skills that they need to deal with emotions and solve problems appropriately. However, we also recognise that sometimes growing up can be difficult and that the children may need someone, other than an adult, to talk to for support and reassurance and this is the important role of our ‘Big Brothers’ and ‘Big Sisters’!

The ‘Big Brothers/Sisters’ are children in KS2 who are selected for their considerate nature and responsible attitude. When a younger, KS1 child is identified with a particular concern, e.g. a friendship issue, then they are paired up and introduced to their very own ‘Big Brother/Sister’. The ‘Big Brother/Sister’ is then available to talk to, listen and provide support for their ‘Little Sister’ or 'Little Brother' whenever they are needed. Once this partnership has been formed, it is then in place for as long as is necessary.

During playtimes at Woodley C of E, the staff on duty and the children who are involved are all aware of the following guidelines:

‘Big Brother/Sister’ Guidelines

  • ‘Little Brother/Sister’ tells an adult in the KS1 playground that they need to go and speak to their ‘Big Brother/Sister’.
  • ‘Little Brother/Sister’ goes to the KS2 playground and asks an adult to help them find their own ‘Big Brother/Sister’.
  • ‘Big Brother/Sister’ takes their ‘Little Brother/Sister’ to the Cosy Café to listen and help them to resolve the problem/make them feel better.
  • ‘Big Brother/Sister’ writes notes about what is discussed. If they are unable to solve the problem themselves, they speak to an adult for advice.
  • ‘Big Brother/Sister’ takes their ‘Little Brother/Sister’ back to the KS1 playground and then returns to their own playground.
