Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is an online journal of the children’s reading. It is designed to motivate and encourage even the most reluctant reader through its emphasis on reading real novels at the child’s level. Each child has a profile. For each book a child reads, there is a quiz attached which awards children with a number of points. When a child has competed a quiz, they will record their score in their reading diary. Pupils are expected to quiz at least once a month. Once a child has received a set number of points, they are awarded a certificate. The more points they acquire, the more prestigious the certificate. Certificates are given out and celebrated in Celebrations Assembly each week.

Accelerated Reader continually assesses children’s reading abilities through their performance in quizzes and Star Tests. The program uses this information to adjust a child’s ZPD where necessary, and provides extensive data to both class teacher in how children are progressing, and Reading Champion in what the children are reading. Teachers use this data when assessing their children.
